Water studies on Herm

Many of you who have visited Herm this year may well have met and spoken to Jackie Denman. Jackie is studying with the University of London for an MSc in Environmental Management. She is investigating the effect of different weather conditions on the availability and use of water on the island. In the future it may help to understand more about how the water supply on Herm can be managed to adapt to any predicted climate change.

Jackie, who comes from Herefordshire, first visited Herm in April 2007. Whilst here she realised that the island would provide a good base for her studies. She has been to stay on Herm for 6 days at the end of each month from April to August and has given questionnaires to all hotel guest, self-caterers and campers. As well as that Jackie has given out questionnaires to as many day visitors as possible as they disembark from the Trident ferry. In the afternoons she has positioned herself at the harbour or Rosaire steps so that she could collect completed questionnaires in. Jackie has been delighted with the response from guests and day visitors. Once she has completed her studies the results will be made available to the management of Herm.

Jane Hamon and her grandson Zander were pleased to help Jackie Denman with her studies and fill in a questionnaire.
