Agave Americana        The Century Plant

This succulent is found in Mexico. Here on Herm it grows extremely well putting up with conditions of salt laden winds from the south west. We are lucky to have two in flower this year. The flower spike can rise to heights of 25ft with clusters of yellow flowers. After flowering the plant dies but produces many side shoots that continue to grow and produce new plants. The glaucous leaves produced are toothed and very spiky. The plant loves well drained soils. The two plants in flower are in Fisherman’s Quarry best seen by looking above Fisherman’s cottage.
