Herm Island is proud to represent the Bailiwick of Guernsey in this year’s Royal Horticultural Society Britain in Bloom competition. Herm is entered in the category, ‘Coastal resort with a population of less than 12,000’.
RHS Britain in Bloom, supported by Shredded Wheat , is an environmental campaign that encourages communities to breathe life into their living local green spaces. Whether it’s a spot of gardening, cheering up flowerbeds, cleaning and greening up streets or starting a larger project for local regeneration, RHS Britain in Bloom can help to bring communities together and make a real difference to where you live.
It is not just about hanging baskets and tubs of summer bedding plants. It is about year-round commitment from the community to enhance the environment. Herm is achieving this by getting everyone involved in the Britain in Bloom campaign. We aim to get every islander to take part either by helping to clear rubbish from the beaches, taking photos of the work that is being done, watering tubs and baskets during the summer months or helping to put together the portfolio which has to be submitted ahead of the judging date.
As Herm has such a small permanent population we really do need to involve as many other people as possible from outside our community. Our aim is to involve people from the variety of visiting groups who come to Herm. We have numerous visiting schools and youth groups throughout the season along with the vast number of people who come to actually stay on the island. Many of our guests take an active interest in our island and welcome the chance to be involved.
Please continue to watch these pages for details of how you can become involved in our Britain in Bloom Campaign.
