Herm Gift Shops have a reputation for providing interesting and good value items. From jewellery to clothes, vases to toys and beach goods, chocolates and souvenirs. The shops are set in a Mediterranean style piazza which was built by a team of Italian builders and craftsmen in the 1960s. This adds great character to the harbour front and fits in well with the white-washed and pastel coloured cottages.
The small post office sells fascinating stamps which have become collectors items all over the world. After the second world war, a pigeon postal service operated between Herm and a loft in St Peter Port, Guernsey. Peter Wood then launched a private postal service. Letters and parcels carried both GPO and Herm stamps.
Philatelists still have great interest in Herm Stamps, but the arrangement stopped when the Guernsey Post Office took responsibility for postal services in 1969. The Post Office is next to the Argosy, which sells items suited to childrens' pocket money as well as guides, maps and postcards.
